There is a question that comes up, almost always, in the early conversations with a couple who is starting to think about their wedding in Italy.
"What kind of venue are we?"
It's one of the most beautiful questions we get asked, because it has no wrong answer. It only has different ones. And the right choice doesn't depend on what is most beautiful or most photographed, but on which place truly tells the story of the couple getting married.
Villa, castle or countryside: each of these words evokes something precise.
But what does it actually mean to choose one over the other?
The villa: elegance without compromise
An Italian villa is a promise.
Formal gardens, symmetrical facades, interiors that speak of centuries of refined taste. It is the venue that immediately evokes Italy in its most classical sense, the one international couples picture when they close their eyes and dream of their wedding in the Bel Paese.
Villas work well for those who love order and proportion, for those who want an already impeccable setting without having to build everything from scratch. They often come with established infrastructure: professional kitchens, reception rooms capable of holding large numbers, accommodation for the couple and immediate family.
The other side: the most sought-after villas are also the most booked. Dates fill up in advance, prices reflect demand, and some venues have strict limitations on suppliers, timings and décor. The beauty of the villa is already there, but it must be respected, not reinvented.
Those who choose a villa usually already know what they want: a defined aesthetic, a recognisable atmosphere, a setting that speaks for itself.
The castle: history you can touch

Castles work well for multi-day events, for couples who want to create an immersive, all-encompassing experience for their guests. The Italian interior, Tuscany, Umbria, Piedmont, Sicily, is dotted with structures that have no equal anywhere in the world.
But a word of caution: castles require planning. The logistics can be complex: access, transfers, accommodation for guests nearby. And not every venue has the infrastructure needed for a large event. Some are magnificent but require bringing everything in from outside, from the kitchen to the facilities.
Those who choose a castle are not usually looking for formal perfection. They are looking for authenticity, something that could not be found elsewhere, in any other country in the world.
The countryside: the freedom to create
The Italian countryside is a blank canvas.
Masserias, agriturismos, agricultural estates, farmhouses surrounded by olive groves or vineyards: these venues offer something that villas and castles cannot always provide, the freedom to create something that does not yet exist. A setting built from nothing, an aesthetic assembled piece by piece, an atmosphere that belongs only to that couple and that day.
The countryside is the right choice for those with a precise vision who want that vision to be seen, not filtered through the pre-existing identity of a place. It is also the most suitable option for those seeking intimacy, connection with nature, a slower and more organic pace.
The challenge here is the construction itself. A countryside venue can be wonderfully flexible, but that flexibility comes at a price: everything that isn't there must be brought in, organised and managed. Setup costs can be significant, and logistics, especially for international guests, require close attention.

How to choose: the right questions
There is no universal answer. But there are questions that help find the personal one.
How much creative freedom do you want?
If you already have a very defined vision and want to realise it exactly as you imagine it, the countryside offers more room. If you prefer to lean on something already extraordinary, a villa or a castle offers a setting that speaks for itself.
How many guests will you invite?
Some venues have very precise capacity limits, in both directions. A romantic castle may be perfect for sixty people and impossible for two hundred. A masseria can transform for events of any size, with the right project.
How much does the history of the place matter?
For some couples, knowing that celebrations have taken place in that courtyard for centuries is part of the emotion. For others, it is irrelevant. What matters is how they feel in that space, not what happened there before.
Do you want a one-day or multi-day wedding?
Countryside venues with on-site accommodation naturally lend themselves to multi-day events. Villas and castles can offer the same, but not always. It needs to be verified case by case.
The right venue is not the most beautiful one in absolute terms. It is the one that, the moment you walk in for the first time, makes you understand immediately that it is yours.
